New Zealand's dairy industry emerged in the 1800s and by the 1930s there were factories manufacturing dairy products in almost every town. The history behind the Tararua brand dates back to cooperatives started by dairy farmers in the 1940s. These cooperatives supplied pasteurised milk to South Island cities and towns.
